ECOWAS Progress Mission in the Gambia
Within the framework of the German Financial Cooperation with ECOWAS (though KfW), a delegation of ECOWAS representatives visited The Gambia from 25/06/ to 28/06/2024 to monitor the status of infrastructure investments under the Gambia Pilot Program (GPP).
Throughout the mission, ECOWAS together with representatives of the Project Executing Agency – the Gambia Agency for the Management of Public Works (GAMWORKS) – supported by PEM Consult as Implementation Consultant, visited various construction sites in the Greater Banjul Area (GBA) as well as in the Lower and Upper River Regions (LRR/URR), including an Agri-Food Processing Center (APC) at the Gambia Tourism & Hospitality Institute (GTHI) and Fish Smoking Houses in the GBA, as well as a student dormitory for the University of Science, Engineering and Technology (USET) Branch in Julangel, URR.
The main focus of the mission lay on the progress of rural infrastructure along the three value chains (horticulture, poultry and fishery) for community-owned projects in the regions, such as farmhouses, poultry houses and irrigation systems. The first of these infrastructures, which started in December 2024, have reached completion and will be handed over to the beneficiaries, with more to follow successively. The beneficiaries will further be supported with equipment and machinery to facilitate production, processing and distribution.
The below video produced by ECOWAS provides additional impressions of the progress mission:
The GPP is part of the “Regional Stabilisation and Development Fund for Financial Cooperation in ECOWAS Member States” which has been agreed between The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The overall objective of “The Gambia Pilot Program” is to contribute to the stability and sustainable development of The Gambia through the creation of new employment and income opportunities, especially for youth.
