Duration05/2003 - 04/2007

The overall objective of the MPP6 was to help improve the living standards in poor settlements of six states in the Niger Delta.

The programme contributed to the reduction of poverty and social tension in the regions and strengthened the capacity of civil society organisations to work in partnership with local communities. The project team working throughout the regions stimulated the identification of projects primarily in the farming and fishing communities living at village level, and established appropriate links with other stakeholders in order to capitalise upon and build their capacity to manage the financing of micro-projects funds.

The EDF provided for finance of micro-projects in the fields of infrastructure (including waste, water and sanitation, village transport, health and education). Further activities were: micro and SME development; environmental projects; gender projects; micro-finance; engineering; institution and capacity building of communities and NGOs; research and exchange visits. Each project was screened for gender and environmental aspects.
